SAY Youth Are Helping Prevent Fires
This summer, SAY youth worked alongside Fire Marshal Roberta MacIntyre, and her team from the Sonoma County Fire Prevention Division clearing brush and helping to prevent fires in rural Sonoma County. As part of the Road Side Chipper program, our youth crew members travelled to Fitch Mountain in Healdsburg, and worked hauling branches and debris, utilized a wood chipper, and helped clear brush from the road sides. Fire Marsall Roberta MacIntyre watched out for crew safety, and taught the crew how to spot conditions that could lead to a wildfire. She also trained the crew members on using equipment, like the wood chipper, and on safety precautions, like masks, and ear and eye protection.
Crew members put in a ton of work, on some of the hottest days of the summer, but Michael St John, explains that knowing that their work was helping to prevent fires and keep the community safe, made coming to work each day fun.
